What is an interior designer? Here is everything you need to know if you’re constructing a home in Uganda

An interior designer is a professional who plans, researches, and manages the creation of indoor spaces.

An interior designer is a professional who plans, researches, and manages the creation of indoor spaces. Their goal is to make these environments functional, safe, and visually appealing by determining space requirements and selecting the best layout, materials, colors, and lighting.

They differ from interior decorators, who solely focus on the aesthetic furnishings and styling of an existing space. An interior designer has specialized training and is often involved in the structural and technical systems of a building.

Core Responsibilities

  • Space Planning: Designing floor layouts and determining how people will move safely and comfortably through a room.
  • Technical Drafting & Modeling: Creating 2D and 3D plans using professional software like AutoCAD or SketchUp to share with clients and builders.
  • Building Regulations: Ensuring that all designs meet strict building codes, fire safety regulations, and accessibility standards.
  • Project Management: Selecting materials (like flooring, cabinetry, and tile), establishing budgets, and coordinating with architects, contractors, and tradespeople.

Where They Work

Interior designers work across many environments, including residential homes, corporate offices, hotels, restaurants, and retail spaces. They usually split their time between an office/studio, consulting with clients, and visiting active construction or renovation sites.

If you are considering hiring an interior designer or curious about starting a project, tell me:

  • What type of space are you looking to design (e.g., a home, a restaurant, or an office)?
  • Is it a new build, or are you renovating an existing layout?
